It is almost noon

but today’s Times remains

as we approach your old stoop

They have prettied up the place

you say

Even planted flowers

We didn’t have flowers

(They are orange–

did you notice?)

The air conditioner is new, too

Mine was a piece of crap

Third window up

you point

The floor was sloped

and I had mice

but I loved this neighborhood

Sharing guacamole and chips

at your favorite Mexican restaurant on the corner

you snap a picture of my hands

Peering over the camera

you break into a smile

The best part of this day?

You say

is having you

with me.

I try to drift off

But these demons of the dark

Still call out my name

The twist of fate
is sometimes cruel
to the tender-hearted orphan

who opens her heart
one last time

…only to find the ruins
of some
enchanted memory.

Broken February 7, 2010

A broken haiku

The words do not always match

The beats of my heart

Writing in pencil

I know this, too, is fading

Soon, it will be gone

I walk through the door

Wounded, too, but you don’t know

I am the healer
